Santa Maria Valley, Santa Barbara The Santa Maria Valley is a natural funnel-shaped valley opening west to the Pacific Ocean. The soils within the area range in texture from a sandy loam to clay loam. Since the valley opens to the ocean, there is no opposition to the sea fog that moves in overnight, engulfing lower lying vineyards, and often lingering into mid-day, creating a cool growing environment. The Rancho Viñedo Vineyard, is located at Western portion of the original Rancho Tepusquet Land Grant, was planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes in 1973 by the Robert N. Woods family. Old vines, on their own roots are the main draw of Rancho Viñedo. The completely unique million-year-old soils have strong association to the land.  Light lemon-yellow color in the glass.
