19th C. American Folk Art Carved Hunting Horn, Masonic, Woodsmen, Missouri 1896

American Hunting Horn adorned with various symbols and illustrations dated Nov. 10th,  1896  Hickory, Missouri. Also carved into the horn is :"Poplar Springs Lumber Co."Along with the Inscription:"Made for F.E. Moore, Hickory, Miss."And the Initials "F.E.M."There are Masonic Symbols on the horn, along with a knight with a skull in a crest, which likely refers to the Knights and Ladies of Security. We found, in our research, a Fountain E. Moore who was involved with them and which we think may have been the recipient of this horn.A snake eating itself, various dogs, crossed hunting rifles, deer, and an anchor are among the symbols. There is also a Woodsmen of America trade symbol on it. This is a very interesting and great example of the tradition of American carved horn,with lots of affinity with scrimshaw carvings found throughout history. We believe this to be one of the finest hunting horns available at the moment. Approx.
