About the AuthorChayim Israel Perl was born in 1925 in the little town of Visho and at the age of four moved to the village of Schiff in Maramures County in Romania. In early May 1944 he was expelled with the rest of the Dargomirest ghetto to Auschwitz, and after selection he was transferred from Auschwitz to Buchenwald, Dora Mittelbau, and he was finally liberated from Bergen Belsen in April 1945. He was sent to Sweden by the Red Cross. In December 1947 he set sail for Palestine on the immigrant ("Ma'pilim") ship known as the "29th" of November 1946". After several unsuccessful attempts to land, he was arrested as an illegal immigrant by the British Royal Navy and deported to DP camp in Cyprus. In February 1949 he finally reached the "haven of peace" and shortly after joined the Israel Defense Forces.
