Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) are a sunfish with a widespread range throughout North America, east of the Rocky Mountains. They are one of the most widely recognized North American fish and are often the first catch experienced by people beginning to fish. Bluegill are one of the most important forage fish throughout their range and are a staple prey item throughout almost all stages of their life for a wide variety of predatory fish and other aquatic animals.
