Northern Green Frog (Lithobates clamitans melanota)

Northern green frogs (Lithobates clamitans melanota) are a common species of ranid frog native to northeastern North America. Often confused with bullfrogs (L. catesbeianus) they can be distinguished by the pair of dorsolateral folds extending from behind the tympanic membranes (“ears”) to a little over halfway down their back. Northern green frogs, while not quite as large as bullfrogs, are still a heavy-bodied frog that can reach up to 3.5” in body length. In captivity they need a fair amount of space which includes a predominantly aquatic set-up with several areas of land and strong filtration. These frogs will eat just about anything they can fit in their mouths so keep that in mind when choosing tankmates!
