A beautiful, cranberry-red sommerso art glass vase, with a cyclone “footprint” and a particularly nice, overall battuto finish. The Italian word for ‘beaten’ or ‘struck,’ battuto, refers to a cold-working technique in which glass is cut or ground to create small, irregular facets on its surface, mimicking the look of hammered silver or stone. (In a culinary context, a battuto is a finely chopped mixture of aromatic vegetables, typically onion, carrot, and celery.) A traditional battuto is achieved using a grinding wheel or glass lathe, but hand grinders can also be used. As with many cold-working techniques, attaining a good battuto finish can be time-consuming!
