STILL LIFE WITH ARTIST’S TOOLS BY UNKNOWN ARTIST (2000s)
A sophisticated modernist still life with painter’s tools and a notebook. Thick patches of oil paint have been applied with brushes and spatulas and a somewhat regular grid has been carved into the resulting impasto surface. This fracturing of the visual plane produces something of a semi-cubist effect—that emphasizes fragmentation rather than abstraction. The biomorphic form of the painter’s palette straddles the framework—in winsome defiance. Signed indistinctly at the lower right. Presented in a slim, gold-tone frame.
