Born in Murano in 1912, Barbini began learning traditional glassblowing techniques in his teens as an apprentice to Cristallerina Franchetti and the S.A.I.A.R. Ferro Toso. A gifted artist, he was recognized as a Maestro before he was 20 years old. In the 1930s he continued his studies under the renowned Napoleone Martinuzzi and eventually opened his own furnace called Vetreria Alfredo Barbini in the 1950s. Known for his experimental nature Barbini created delicately colored organic and biomorphic objects. Among numerous other honors, Barbini was awarded the "Osella d'Oro" by Venice's Associazione degli Industriale and the honorary title "Commendatore" and was named "1989 Venetian of the Year" by the Settemari Association.
