EDGAR DEGAS DANCER Edgar Degas (French, 1834-1917) was a 19th century painter and sculptor. Born into a wealthy family, he studied law before art. He honed his skills at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Despite traditional training, Degas was drawn to avant-garde movements becoming a founder of Impressionism. Best known for his depictions of dancers, he was fascinated by the ballet world. Backstage access to the Paris Opera enabled him to sketch the dancers in their routine environment, producing moments in real life. Our vase reproduces one of his pastel sketches showing a ballerina taking a moment to retie her bow.   Dancer, ca. 1880. The Metropolitan Museum of Art
