The name itself was actually a marketing term only used by the Atlanta & West Point (A&WP) and Western Railway of Alabama (WRoA). The two companies met at West Point, Georgia and for many years were under the Georgia Railroad & Banking Company's control, which connected Atlanta with Augusta and Macon. All three got their start handling agricultural-related traffic, transitioned to manufacturing and merchandise, and then spent later years as successful bridge lines. From an early period they were jointly owned by the Louisville & Nashville and Atlantic Coast Line, remaining subsidiaries until the 1980's.
