A Vida Portuguesa Portuguese Handkerchief
Traditionally used by rural field workers—on the head, around the neck, attached at the waist—the handkerchief served many practical purposes from sun protection to hand cleaning. It became especially favorable with a plaid pattern in red, which was noted for its youthful brightness. In 1774, a fabric factory was set up in Alcobaça. They started manufacturing the handkerchief that found its way to Portuguese cities where it was especially popular among snuff consumers. Therefore it became known as “Lenço Tabaqueiro” or “Tobacco Handkerchief.” A Vida Portuguesa, the Lisbon-based, women-owned shop specializing in Portugal-made goods, has reintroduced the iconic textile to a new generation. In addition to all its usual functions, this cotton-blend handkerchief can also be used as table napkins for your dinner party. The A Vida Portuguesa Portuguese Handkerchief measures 19.7l x 19.7"w.
