Once a persecutor of the Christian church, later its champion and missionary, he is styled Apostle to the Gentiles because of his extensive missionary work throughout Asia Minor and westward as far as Spain. He was martyred and buried in Rome. His letters to the churches he founded are included in the New Testament. He is the patron of public relations in Greece and Malta. His feast is June 29.
