During the Civil War, soldiers from both the Union and Confederate armies would often visit Mount Vernon when they weren't engaged in battle.  It is said that as a sign of respect, they wore cloaks over their uniforms and left their weapons at the main gate.  Soldiers who would normally have been shooting at each other put their differences aside in tribute to this great American and his hom
