Print - Ballyhannon Castle, County Clare
“Ballyhannon Castle, County Clare” Print by Irish Artist/Photographer James A. Truett. Built in 1490 by the MacNamara Clan, Ballyhannon Castle & Coach House has hosted many socialites, celebrities and rock stars since it was restored in 1970. Located near the County Clare village of Quin, this tower house now is used as a vacation rental. Home to the MacNamaras for many centuries, it had other owners as well including the O'Brien Clan during the ever-changing political climate on late Medieval Ireland. The American oil heiress, Elizabeth Phillips (of Phillips Petroleum) and her husband, Henry D. Irwin, purchased the castle and spearheaded restoration in the early 1970s. The five-story, 100-foot high structure has nine bedrooms, and with the adjoining Coach House, can accommodate groups of up to 25 people.
