One of the reasons the luxurious 5-star Dromoland Castle Hotel & Country Club survived Ireland's turbulent times when many castles and country houses were burned out is because the owners, the Lords Inchiquin (O'Briens), were considered kind and benevolent landlords. The current Gothic-style castle was built in the early 1800s by the O'Brien Clan, who inhabited the castle until it was sold in 1962 at a time when large estates struggled for economic survival. Now owned by a consortium of Irish American investors, the castle has hosted U.S. Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, King Juan Carlos I of Spain, Nelson Mandela, Muhammad Ali, Richard Branson, Jack Nicholson, Johnny Cash, The Beatles and many more international figures.
