Deseret Alphabet

5H 1869 Includes the first section of the Book of Mormon Description The Deseret Alphabet was developed in the mid-19th century by leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), primarily under the direction of Brigham Young. It was intended to be a phonetic writing system to simplify spelling and pronunciation in English. The alphabet consisted of 38 letters, some borrowed from existing Latin script letters and others created specifically for English sounds. Despite initial enthusiasm, it fell out of widespread use by the early 20th century due to practical challenges and lack of broader adoption outside of Mormon communities.
