Black Onyx Earrings

It is formed when silica is deposited in lava gas cavities. This results in the unique bands or stripes that Onyx stones usually exhibit. Onyx is often a black stone, but there are also Onyx stones that are brown, pink, red, and green. There are also colorless Onyx stones. The banding in onyx is white and is usually just straight lines. Onyx stones are also sometimes dyed to change or improve their color. It’s an excellent stone for carving because it has a hardness of 6.5 on the Mohs scale. The name Onyx comes from the Greek word ‘onux,’ which means claw or fingernail because the veins found on the stone look very much like the colors of a fingernail.
