His real name was Hafenbredl, which he later changed to Hubner. He was first secretary to the Austrian ambassador in Lisbon and then elected consul in Leipzig. In 1848 he was in Milan and during the Five Days' Uprising he was kidnapped as a hostage and remained a prisoner for several months. Returning to Austria he was appointed ambassador to France and in 1865 to
