The Great Gulf Headwall lies deep in winter shadow; direct sunlight may be as rare here in winter as the tread of hikers. Even in summer, the trail up the Headwall is a challenging scramble. Mount Clay’s eastern face, equally rugged, lies in bright sunshine in this photograph. On the left of the photo, the thin tracery of the Mount Washington Carriage Road can be seen here and there as it wends its way to the summit.
