Bartramia pomiformis Tray -- Shade
Bartramia pomiformis is a cushiony and fluffy moss species. It has curving leaves that are somewhat dull due to papillose (hairy) qualities. It is a light-medium shade of green. Short sporophytes (less than an inch) are distinctive with round capsules that resemble little green apples (early stage). Its second scientific name, pomiformis, means "apple-like" in Latin. Plants are loosely connected in a mound shapes, usually about two to five inches tall. It is named after naturalist and Nurseryman, John Bartram, who collected all types of plants in the 18th century. Moist conditions support better growth. In nature, it prefers rocky ledges or sloping hillsides that offer plenty of moisture and shade. Plant this acidic moss species around water features. It tolerates partial sun but really prefers shady spots. At my house, Bartramia goes into sporophytic stage in winter months. When snow melts, I am always delighted to see its "apple" ball-shaped capsules. Bartramia can be found from the
