The original lithograph was printed in 1892, advertising a series of appearances by singer Aristide Bruant at les "Ambassadeurs", a cabaret in the Monmartre neighborhood of Paris.  Aristide Bruant was a French cabaret singer, comedian, and nightclub owner. He was known to perform in a red scarf, black cape and black boots. He was featured several times by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in advertisement posters. He has also been credited as the creator of the chanson réaliste musical genre.
