Having migrated from Lithuania with his family to the United States, Shahn began his path to becoming an artist in New York, where he was first trained as a lithographer. It was fitting that such a venerable American artist would design this image of birds reminiscent of Picasso's peace dove to announce Mourlot's arrival in North America. With his intimate knowledge of lithography and a keen sense of humour, Ben Shahn became quickly one of the studio's favorite visitor.
