Though they come from 21st-century Los Angeles, Entrance look like dead ringers for a band from 1967 Haight-Ashbury. Their mystically tinged psychedelic blues-rock is more Jon Spencer Blues Explosion than Grateful Dead, but the outfit nevertheless offers an entertaining tour through the musical fashions of a bygone era. Singer Guy Blakeslee's cheerfully anarchic vocals on "Grim Reaper Blues" conjure a stoner Doc Boggs, and for good measure there's also the prog-jazz of "Silence of a Crowded Train," the sitar-laden ersatz mysticism of "Requiem for Sandy Bull," and the genuinely haunting, Appalachian-sounding ballad, "Prayer of Death."
