That Drive Like Jehu's challenging, brutally rocking 1994 swansong, YANK CRIME, saw release not on an indie but Interscope Records speaks to the extent to which Nirvana turned the music industry upside down in the 1990s. This isn't music for the masses but the converted: a noisy, wide-open, steamrolling iteration of deconstructionist punk. Drummer Mark Trombino and bassist Mike Kennedy are in pummeling lock-step, and guitarists Rick Froberg and John Reis (later of Rocket from the Crypt) trade manic guitar squalls throughout, with Froberg adding throaty, emotive vocals. The sheer power of Drive Like Jehu's music reaches its apex on the longer cuts here, such as the explosive "Luau" and "Sinews," which ebbs and flows over the course of its almost ten-minute running time but never lets up. Neither does YANK CRIME.
