I first started working with Barbie in 1985 in Mattel's Samples Department. In 1988 I began writing toy fair scripts, videos, marketing skits, custom songs and other creative for Barbie at Mattel. Her shirtwaist blouse is a distinctly American fashion innovation, with a lacy jabot at the neck and gigot (leg-of-mutton) sleeves giving a fullness to the bodice which accentuates her tiny waist. Corsets keep waists small but don't have the steel-reinforcing of earlier times.
