'Columnar' was found as a chance selection that was extremely narrow in a large block of large growing Japanese maples in Boring, Oregon. The tight growing habit made this tree stand out as something unique. 'Columnar' is fairly fast growing and is expected to reach 15 ft in height by 4-5 ft in width in 10 years.
