The mokume technique, meaning "wood grain metal," was originally developed by 17th-century Japanese sword makers to imitate the striations of wood grain in metal. Adapted and advanced by Tiffany’s silver department, this effect was achieved by laminating dozens of sheets of different colored metals, then manipulating the surface to reveal organic patterns of remarkable depth and variety.
