There is a saying that those who eat it are given the intellect of a lion and nerves of steel. There is a growing body of research showing that lion's mane may promote neurogenesis that seems to support this. Lion's mane contains beta-glucans, hericenones A and C-H, erinacines A-K, orcinol derivatives, beta-sisterol, ergosterol, xylose, ribose, arabinose, galactose, and mannose. The polysaccharide fraction, specifically the beta-glucan family, are considered the most activity. Because of this, the potency of extracts can be estimated by their polysaccharide percentage.
