British artist Jo Elbourne has been making textile works since 2015. Her pared-down practice explores - both literally and figuratively - the notion of managing tension, and plays with the possibilities of line and colour using a singular material and a simple yet exacting technique. The surface of each piece is created in iterative movements wrapping fine yarn -- or braided cord for larger works -- row by row to form taut and layered pieces that yield images of subtle depth. Whilst working within seemingly restrictive parameters, this linear and ordered method of making is offset by a free and intuitive approach to colour. Jo studied at Wimbledon School of Art and later Ravensbourne College of Design in London. She lives and works in the coastal town of Margate in south east England.
