Hōgetsudō Moon Viewing Wasanbon Sugar Higgashi Assortment – Small This is an assortment of fine wasanbon sugar sweets, a traditional specialty of Sanuki. The custom of moon viewing (Tsukimi) during the harvest moon, known as Jūgoya, began in the Heian period. It was introduced from China and became popular among the nobility. In the Konjaku Monogatari, a collection of tales from this era, there is a story called “The Rabbit in the Moon”, adapted from a Buddhist tale from India, which is said to be one of the origins of the moon rabbit motif. By the Edo period, the custom spread to the general public as a harvest festival. People offered pampas grass as a symbol of rice plants, rice dumplings as a symbol of the moon, and seasonal crops such as taro and chestnuts in gratitude for the harvest. This seasonal assortment, “Moon Viewing Wasanbon”, is inspired by these traditions. It features motifs of the moon, rabbits, and autumn harvest, beautifully shaped in delicate wasanbon sugar. Enjoy
