Mappin, sterling silver child's or christening mug or cup, beautifully adorned with acid-etched motifs depicting a house and a mouse, made in London in 1898. It measures 3 1/8'' in height by 2 1/4'' in diameter at the top, weighs 5.4 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks as shown.  The firm started when Jonathan Mappin opened his workshop in 1775 in Sheffield with a view to creating outstanding British silverware. The company continued to expand and pass through successive generations of Mappin silversmiths. In the mid nineteenth century, under the management of Jonathan Mappin’s four great grandsons, the business was incorporated as Mappin Brothers Ltd and experienced a significant period of expansion. In 1851 the production was transferred to the new Queens Plate & Cutlery Works, and the company participated with its full production to the London Great Exhibition and showrooms were opened in London.
