Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, commonly known as AOC, is an American politician serving as the U.S. Representative for New York's 14th congressional district since 2019. Born on October 13, 1989, in the Bronx, New York, she graduated from Boston University with degrees in international relations and economics. Before entering politics, she worked as a bartender and waitress while also engaging in community organizing and educational work. In 2018, at age 28, she pulled off one of the biggest upsets in modern American politics by defeating 10-term incumbent Joe Crowley in the Democratic primary, and went on to win the general election, becoming the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. As a member of Congress, Ocasio-Cortez has become one of the most prominent progressive voices in American politics and a leading member of the Democratic Party's left wing. She has been a vocal advocate for the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, tuition-free public college, and addressing income inequality.
