Ruellia strepens Common names included Wild Petunia, Limestone Ruellia, Limestone Wild Petunia, Woodland Petunia and Smooth Wild Petunia. A charming plant native to rich open woods, thickets, and borders of streams and ponds through much of Texas, central and eastern U.S. This lovely clump-forming perennial typically grows between 1 and 3 feet tall. Its lilac to lavender purple trumpet-shaped flowers bloom spring through summer. Thrives in moist, organically rich, well-drained soils in part shade, though it’s quite adaptable and can tolerate nearly full shade too. Larval host plant to the Common Buckeye butterfly and a nectar source for hummingbirds and other pollinators. Deer resistant.
