Carex blanda (Common Wood Sedge) is a cool season short sedge that will sprawl if left to its own devices. With competition, it forms polite clumps, without competition use it's agressive nature to fill in bare areas quickly. Very commonly found in savannas and woodlands in wet-mesic to dry-mesic soils, it will tolerate prairie sun as it is an understory plant to larger species. Stocky seedheads form in spring atop winged stems. An important food source for insects, mammals and birds.
