Carex molesta (Troublesome Sedge) is a very common sedge found in disturbed wetland edges, all the way to mesic to dry savannas and open woodlands, occasionally found in the open prairie. A sedge that is widely tolerant of varying soil wetness and sun levels. It is weedy and tolerant of disturbance, which can be used to your advantage in early restoration sites. This is actually a preferred sedge of ours in these early restoration sites, particularly woodlands, where pioneer sedge seeds can be expensive and difficult to germinate. This is a food source for certain buttterfly, moth, and foul.
