Carya ovata (Shagbark Hickory)
Carya ovata (Shagbark Hickory) is a tree made famous for its "shaggy bark". I find them quite impressive and distinctive with its shabby chic bark. Shagbarks are slow growers in a container so the first three seasons in a #1 pot, they only develop roots so there is not much to growth. Some #1 pots may be the first year (typically 4-8" tall) or third-year plants (4-12" tall), you might see a spectacular 1.5'-2' growth out of a #7 container or a stupendous 3' from a #10 :) When you get them in the ground they tend to take off a bit faster because they can more easily develop the taproot. This tree can produce nuts in about 40 years.
