Prunus americana (American Plum) is a native shrub of the woodland/savanna edge, open woodlands, and prairies.  This species has beautiful white flowers in the spring, which produce fruit that been-been know to be used in preserves and wine. Fall color is a deep red.  It is beautiful, but be careful on small landscapes as it produces thorny thickets and can easily overtake a garden.  In larger properties, it can provide a naturalized look and food for wildlife among some of its benefits.
