Great Bur Reed is a common wetland forb with bright green swordlike leaves that reach about four feet high. Sparganium eurycarpum has white powder puff flowers mature into medieval mace like spiky green ball of seeds. These seeds are readily consumed by many mallards and other wetland and shorebirds. It prefers prairie situations in muddy or sandy soils and will tolerate standing water, which makes it a great wetland restoration plant. One of the only plants that can seem to stand on its own with narrow and hybrid cattails.
