It's pretty easy to see how American Beautyberry got its common name. Spectacular, bright purple berries are the namesake of this lovely, southern shrub, providing a bright berry color that is uncommon among our native flora. With arching stems and a loose growth habit, American Beautyberry is perfect for woodland edges and informal gardens, or prune the stems back hard in late winter for a fuller, more compact look. Plant in a protected spot to prevent dieback during harsh winters, and watch as the birds feast upon the brilliant berries through fall and into winter. Conditions: Full sun to part shade; medium to moist, well-draining soils Size: 3' - 6' tall, 3' - 6' spread Zone: 6 - 12  Wildlife Value: Flowers attract small bees and hoverflies; berries provide food for many small birds   Photo: Samantha Nestory
