Dark-eyed Juncos are among the most common winter visitors in Colorado and many of the Lower 48 states. Although all belong to a single species and intermix on the wintering grounds, juncos disperse in spring to nesting areas in several distinct areas. This breeding separation has led to the development of several different races or subspecies. Only one junco type remains in Colorado during summer. I painted this image mainly to help myself memorize the traits and names of the five most common junco races that return to Colorado each fall. I then added the race name below each bird to help myself and others remember the plumage pattern of each race.
