French Line: A rare maiden voyage medallion for the LAFAYETTE designed by famed French medalist Maurice Delannoy (1885-1972). The French Line commissioned Delannoy to design other maiden voyage medallions for ships such as the DE GRASSE and NORMANDIE. A detailed portrait of the ship appears on one side of the 2.75" diameter bronze medallion. Translated from French, the legend reads, "M.S. LAFAYETTE - The Largest French Motorship". Her maiden voyage month of May 1930 is underneath. On the other side is a raised portrait of General Lafayette. His name and years of life, 1757-1834, are fitted around the perimeter. The artist's name appears to one side. No case. Very good condition.
