Ranitomeya amazonica “Red”
Ranitomeya amazonica can be found in the Amazon Rainforest in several countries, however the specific “Red” locale is from the Iquitos region in Peru. R. amazonica are a small frog that typically reaches a size of 16-19mm. R. amazonica do not show sexual dimorphism, although the females tend to be slightly larger than the males. R. amazonica will readily breed in the home vivarium, choosing to lay their eggs in bromeliads or film canisters. If film canisters are used they should be placed at an angle so that they retain water. The frog’s eggs are deposited below the water line. Upon hatching the male frog will transport his tadpoles to separate bodies of water, where the female may lay unfertilized feeder eggs for the tadpole to consume. The tadpoles are cannibalistic, thus should be housed individually if raised outside of the vivarium.
