Like the unexpected fire of a sunset, or the flash of autumn leaves, Carnelian captivates. A glassy, translucent stone, Carnelian is an orange-colored variety of Chalcedony, a mineral of the Quartz family. Its color varies from pale pinkish-orange to a deep rusty brown, though it is most known for its brilliant orange and red-orange crystals. Some of the most beautiful and gemmy carnelian in the world comes from the foothills of the Cascade Mountains in Washington state, like this lovely small nodule. The face is bands of butterscotch and orange, with a large quartz crystal center. This nodule was naturally broken to display the face, and I lightlly polished the banding to bring out the glow of the carnelian. There are some darker mineral crystals adhering to the quartz... possibly iron which is what gives carnelian its color but I don't really know.
