Dr. James Barry Historically Queer Enamel Pride Pin

Please verify your pin selection. We created these NerdyKeppie exclusive designs for "Historically Queer: LGBTQIA+ Historical Figure Enamel Pins", our 2023 Kickstarter. Each pin measures 1.75 inches across and features a queer historical figure, surrounded by flowers in appropriate flag colors.  Born in Cork, Ireland, Barry received his medical training from the University of Edinburgh Medical School. He served in the British military for his entire adult life, and indeed, he had to be forced to retire in 1859.  Barry lived as a man for his entire adult life, both in public and in private. Indeed, a scandal during his career accused him of "buggery" with Lord Charles Somerset. He went AWOL to return to Somerset when Lord Charles fell ill, and cared for him until his death in 1831 before returning to military service.  While some biographies of Dr. Barry refer to him as a "lady surgeon," Barry was extremely emphatic about his status as a man, and gave explicit instructions for his body
