The indigenous forms developed by the Chaco Indians, performing repertoires basically related to religious rituals, and the Creole music, of European influences, emerged as a result of the conquest and the missions. Musical instruments include a wide variety of harps, violins, and guitars, as well as drums and the "bombo" (bass drum). The most characteristic musical-dance form in Paraguay is the "polka" (not related to the European polka), with considerable affinity to the zamba of northern Argentina. Most polka texts describe military, political, or patriotic events, although there are some with romantic lyrics. Sung polkas are accompanied by one or two guitars.
