Amsonia is a low-maintenance drought-resistant native that brings some extraordinary features to the table. In spring fluffy and airy feeling light green foliage emerges growing in a uniform clump, which transitions to a darker green as the growing season wears on. In late spring, early summer, clumps of periwinkle blue flowers spring from the top portions of the foliage creating a blanket of pollinator friendly blue flowers. As the flowers fade and fall approaches, String theory changes from deep green to a distinct and gorgeous golden yellow orange that makes it appear almost like a living flame in your landscape. This introduction of Amsonia is a compact version of the popular ‘Storm Cloud’. In the summer it is said to be less likely to demonstrate the chlorotic leaves that are common in Amsonia hubrichtii, while still providing ample flowers and brilliant golden orange fall color.
