This folio sheet features a pair of maps of the territory near Hamburg, Germany as it was in the late 17th century. The compass roses of both maps orient them south (north at the bottommost point of the roses). Hamburg, an early member of the Hanseatic League was and is one of the busiest and most important European port cities, with access to the North Sea via the River Elbe. The bird’s eye view shows the city, its waterways, its fortifications and its environs in some detail. An inset in the lower map features a panoramic view of the city as it was in Visscher’s time, featuring major architectural edifices along with a key naming them. Many cities and fortifications on both sides of the river are depicted and named in both maps. The Elbe and the North Sea are busy with seagoing vessels of various kinds. Both maps feature elaborate cartouches, and a vignette in the lower left of the upper map features putti, a river god, and allegorical figures representing abundance.
