The map was published almost immediately following the campaigns of independence from Spain in South America led by Simon Bolivar and José de San Martín, both of whom are credited with the liberation of Peru from Spain. The coastline is described in detail, including countless ports at river deltas. The Andes run the full length of Peru north to south, parallel to the coastline, and are beautifully detailed. Lake Titicaca, straddling the border between Peru and Bolivia in the Andes is one of South America’s largest lakes, and the world’s highest navigable body of water. It is said to be the birthplace of the Incas and is home to numerous ruins. In its vicinity are national reserves sheltering rare aquatic wildlife such as giant frogs.
