1817 West India Islands – St. Christophers / St. Lucia / Nevis

This is a fantastic map of the Islands of St. Christophers (St. Kitts), Nevis, and St. Lucia. Each of these islands changed hands between the French and English during the latter half of the 18th Century. Each island would eventually be under control of the British Empire towards the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Nevis would later be incorporated into St. Christophers, which is more commonly known today as St. Kitts. Physical topography is detailed along with the locations of various parishes, towns, forts, churches, bays, rivers, and ponds. The map was published as part of John Thompson’s “A New General Atlas,” in 1817 out of Edinburgh, Scotland. The atlas acted as a continuation of Pinkerton’s Modern Atlas of 1815 as the resemblance between the two in quite noticeable. Thompson’s atlas adds about twenty maps not included in that of Pinkerton.
