17th Century French carved walnut choir stalls. The stalls have flip-top seats know as a misericord, or mercy seat. Shoulder-high carved open roundels gracefully slope downward terminating in five carved arms, each with a different face. The interior of the  backrest has a picture within a picture carved design. Misericords were designed to support members of the clergy during long periods of prayer. The seat of the choir stall flips up when not in use, revealing a scalloped protuberance know as a mercy seat. The scallop acts as a shelf to support a person while in the standing position.
